Munnar Overview

Postby MaarkMoon » Wed Jul 08, 2009 8:48 pm

Munnar is a small town located in the Idukki district of Kerala. Its name is derived from the fact that the area is strategically located at the meeting point of 3 rivers. This area generally receives a cold and wet climate as it is a hill station located at 1600mts to around 1800mts. Covered by greenery owing to the tea plantations in Munnar, adventure sports facilities, scenic fauna and flora and the fact that it provides a pleasant climate almost throughout the year, makes Munnar one of the most sought after travel destinations in Kerala. A large part of Munnar is covered by tea plantations from the early British times, and was developed for the sole reason of tea cultivation by the pioneer J.D Munro and hence they are now, the producers of very high quality tea not only to Kerala and the whole of India, but also to the whole world.

Munnar Hotels have been known for their excellent hospitality and their cozy accommodation. One can choose from staying in a tent, tree house, villas etc. or a normal room all outfitted with luxurious amenities to make any visitors comfortable as well as give them a memorable experience to remember. As it is home to the highest peak in South India called ‘Anamudi’, trekking and picnicking are encouraged in Munnar. Other tourist activities include plantation tours, wild life tours, tea factory tours, boating, fishing, para-gliding, cycling, etc. A visit to the Tea Museum is always advised as the museum holds artifacts and information about tea, the methods and equipment used to produce tea in the British times and also a lot of facts and figures about Munnar’s tea estates and coffee plantations. Another must-see in Munnar is the CSI church built by the British in 1910. This stone church holds a lot of stained glass work and it is a haven for any tourist owing to its peaceful, calm, serene ambience.

Everyone in Munnar is either employed in the tea industry or the tourism industry as both these industries are the major contributors to Munnar’s economy.

Munnar is a beautiful area to experience because of the tea estates, cool climate and vast mountains and especially the greenery; thanks.
